If you’re thinking about eloping in British Columbia, the Okanagan should be at the top of your list. Why? Because it’s got everything: incredible views, a variety of landscapes, and it’s the perfect mix of adventure and romance. I had the pleasure of photographing Richelle and Nathan’s Okanagan elopement in February, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of amazing, despite the fact it was freezing cold (more on that later!).
Let’s dive into why the Okanagan is a dream destination for couples looking for a beautiful, adventure-filled elopement!
The Okanagan region in British Columbia is seriously magical. Whether you’re into mountain views, lake vibes, or the feel of a cozy vineyard, the Okanagan has got you covered! Plus, it’s not as crowded as other places, which means you get all the beauty without feeling like you’re in a tourist trap. It’s an adventure elopement paradise!
When Richelle, Nathan, and I set out for their elopement, we weren’t just after pretty photos, we wanted to capture the feeling of being in a place that felt uniquely theirs. Whether it was the stillness of Kalamalka Lake or the breathtaking view from the mountaintop, this spot had so much to offer.
Okay, here’s the deal. You want your elopement photos to have variety, right? That’s why location scouting is a must! The best part about eloping in the Okanagan is how close all the different locations are to each other. We didn’t have to drive far to get from one breathtaking view to the next!
We shot by Kalamalka Lake, which is one of the most gorgeous lakes I’ve seen, and then we hiked up a little mountain for some stunning panoramic shots. (And when I say little, I mean, just enough of a hike to make you feel like you earned that epic view.) Totally worth it! Being prepared and knowing where to go next allowed us to get a variety of photos that really captured the adventure side of the day, plus the more intimate, romantic moments, too.
I’ve got to be real, it was freezing during Richelle and Nathan’s elopement. Like, bone-chilling cold. We’re talking February in the Okanagan, so you know it’s cold, right? But we powered through! And when I say we, I mean Richelle was in her gorgeous dress, braving the cold while I had a nice warm jacket. It’s all part of the adventure, right? We took a lot of breaks in the car to warm up, but once we got back out there, we got some seriously amazing shots that made it all worth it!
If you’re planning an adventure elopement in the winter, make sure you’re prepared! Layers, hot drinks, and some strategic car breaks will do wonders. And, hey, the cold adds a special element to the day, there’s something about sticking it out together that just makes everything feel more authentic. Plus, it makes the snuggles between shots extra cozy!
One of my favorite things about shooting an elopement in the Okanagan is how many different looks we could get in one day. One moment, we were in the middle of a gorgeous lake, and then we were up on a mountain with the whole valley at our feet. The variety gives you tons of opportunities to capture different vibes and moods, making your photos feel fresh and dynamic.
If you plan on eloping, take some time to find out what spots really speak to you and fit your vibe. And don’t be afraid to get a little creative with it! You want photos that reflect who you are as a couple, so why not make the most of the landscape? An Okanagan elopement gives you the chance to play with all kinds of settings, from wide open spaces to sparkling lakes, and everything in between.
Here’s something I’m super excited to offer: film add-ons to my photography packages!! Yup, that’s right! If you want a little something extra, I create feature films that bring your British Columbia elopement to life. For Richelle and Nathan, I captured some behind-the-scenes footage throughout the day, and it was such a sweet way to remember how their Okanagan elopement unfolded.
Seeing them laugh together, share a quiet moment by the water, and just be in love—that’s something photos can’t quite capture. But with a film, you can relive all those little moments. I posted some examples on my Instagram, and let me tell you, the response has been amazing. You can check it out here and imagine yourself experiencing those moments all over again!
If you’ve made it this far, I’m guessing you’re sold on the idea of eloping in the Okanagan! And honestly, who wouldn’t be? You get stunning landscapes, a variety of locations all in one place, and the chance to make your elopement feel as personal and unique as your love story.
If you’re thinking about an Okanagan elopement, don’t be afraid to go for it. Embrace the adventure, make it your own, and don’t be afraid to get creative with the locations. Whether you’re planning a mountain hike, a lakeside moment, or something else entirely, the Okanagan has everything you need to make your day magical.
“Working with Sarah was a DREAM! She was beyond amazing and so fun during our shoot! The photos she sent blew us out of the water! We were overwhelmed with how STUNNING they were and how perfectly she captured us. Her work is 10/10 and I can’t wait to do another shoot with her! I especially loved that she came with a vision. She knew exactly what she wanted for our shoot and she executed it perfectly!! We can’t say enough amazing things about Sarah herself and her beautiful work!” – Richelle and Nathan
