There’s no shortage of advice when it comes to wedding planning, but let’s get real—how to have a stress-free wedding is one of the most important things to consider. The truth is, no matter how much you plan, some things are simply out of your control. And that’s where embracing a flexible, positive mindset comes into play. The best weddings I’ve photographed are the ones where couples have a clear vision—but also the ability to go with the flow when life throws a curveball. And let me tell you, Janine and Sheldon’s wedding at The Barn at Hazel Creek Farm was a prime example of how staying flexible can turn any challenge into something magical!
Let me set the scene for you: Janine and Sheldon’s wedding day was shaping up to be perfect. The venue was stunning, the couple was glowing, and everything was going according to plan. That is, until the rain decided to show up right as we were about to do their first look and wedding party photos outside. Now, if you’re anything like me, you probably envision those beautiful, sunny outdoor moments, but sometimes Mother Nature has other plans.
Here’s the thing—Janine and Sheldon didn’t freak out. They didn’t let the rain throw off their vibe. Instead, they shifted gears and made it work. We moved the photos inside the barn, and let me tell you, it turned out even more intimate and beautiful than we could have imagined. The soft lighting, the rustic charm of the barn, and the quiet, cozy atmosphere created a completely different but equally stunning backdrop for their wedding portraits.
This is the magic of flexibility! Yes, you might have a vision, but when you go with the flow and let go of expectations, you open yourself up to some truly unforgettable moments.
As if the rain wasn’t enough of an adventure, once the clouds parted, we ventured out to the back fields behind the barn. And guess what we found? Baby calves! These little guys were so cute and definitely added some extra joy to the day. The whole experience was unexpected, and honestly, it felt like a perfect symbol for their wedding day: it was real, it was raw, and it was beautifully unplanned!
Janine and Sheldon’s willingness to embrace these unexpected moments made the whole day feel so special. When you’re able to stay open to whatever the day brings, that’s when the real memories are made—and when you can capture some magical photos like these.
One of my absolute favorite moments of the day was when I handed Sheldon the bridal boudoir photo album I’d taken of Janine months earlier. As a photographer who absolutely loves shooting boudoir, it’s always such a special experience to give couples this intimate gift on their wedding day. The look on Sheldon’s face as he flipped through the album was priceless. It’s a quiet, emotional moment that adds something deeply personal and meaningful to their love story.
Whether or not you’re considering boudoir photos, I always encourage couples to think about how they can make their wedding day feel even more unique by incorporating personal touches. And let me just say, a boudoir album is one of the most heartfelt and intimate gifts you can give.
What Janine and Sheldon’s day showed me (yet again!) is how staying positive can really make a difference. They were relaxed and easygoing throughout the day, which kept the mood light and fun—even when plans changed. When you have the mindset that anything can happen and that’s okay, it frees you up to enjoy the little moments as they come. The focus shifts away from perfection and onto the experience—which is what your wedding day is really all about.
When you’re open to the unexpected, you’re able to fully enjoy the real, raw moments—the ones that make your day unforgettable. Whether it’s running into the field with baby calves or being surprised by a change in the weather, it’s all part of the adventure.
Janine and Sheldon’s day was a reminder that while you can plan every detail, the most memorable moments come from being present, letting go of expectations, and enjoying the ride.
“Bride:
Sarah was a dream to have on my wedding day. She made the day run smoothly and kept everything
organized while taking the most beautiful photos I could’ve ever imagined. She made us feel so comfortable in front of the camera and made a point to give my husband and I time alone together for breathers anddebriefs of the day and I couldn’t thank her enough for that. I cannot recommend sarah enough. If you want a fun organized and talented photographer for your day she is the one!!
Groom:
Sarah was so great to work with! She took the most amazing photos of me, my wife, and all our friends and family at our wedding! I would highly recommend Sarah as she is truly amazing at her job but also fun to be around, and made everyone feel comfortable during all the photos. She was also extremely helpful leading up to our big day with helping us get organized and making sure she knew what photos we wanted. 10/10 experience and so thankful for our photos! Thanks Sarah!”
