Rainy engagement photos aren’t just beautiful, they’re full of raw, unfiltered emotion! Imagine this: soft, moody lighting, the way the rain creates little reflections on the ground, and that beautiful, almost romantic feeling of being wrapped up together in a cozy, rainy world. When Eileena and David and I decided to brave the rain for their engagement session, we didn’t know it would be one of the most magical days I’ve had behind the lens. But as I’m sure you already know, rainy engagement photos are the perfect opportunity to capture something uniquely yours!
Their session took place at Golden Ears Provincial Park in Maple Ridge, BC, and if you’ve never been, just imagine lush forests, a beautiful lake, and an open road lined with towering trees. The park gave us a variety of stunning backdrops, all of which became even more enchanting in the rain. If you’re considering a rainy engagement shoot, keep reading—this might just be the nudge you need to embrace the storm and create some of the most memorable photos of your life!
I know the idea of getting soaked might make you hesitate, but trust me when I say that rainy engagement photos bring out an energy and intimacy that’s hard to beat. You and your partner will share moments of laughter, some spontaneous dancing, and even the occasional warm embrace to dry off. The experience becomes so much more real, and that’s what I love about rainy shoots, the raw, genuine connection between you two is highlighted in every frame.
It’s easy to picture sunny skies when you think about your engagement photos, but the beauty of a rainy day is that it brings a completely different vibe to the session. From the way the rain reflects light to the soft mist it creates, the atmosphere is magical. Rainy weather allows us to explore new angles and perspectives, and it encourages you to embrace the moment without worrying about the perfect conditions.
When Eileena and David and I were brainstorming locations, I knew Golden Ears Provincial Park was THE spot! This location has such a variety of landscapes to choose from, which is important for any engagement session, especially one in the rain. Golden Ears offered us lush forests, a serene lake, and an open road where the trees form a natural archway. The rain made everything look even more lush and vibrant—those deep greens and soft gray skies made for a perfect moody backdrop!
What I love most about this location is the variety it offers. We could go from a dark, forested area to a bright and reflective lake, then finish with some wide-open shots along the tree-lined road. The versatility here gave us so many options to play with and made the rainy session feel fresh and dynamic. Whether you’re looking for sweeping landscapes or intimate moments under trees, a location like this has it all. Plus, there’s something so cozy about being surrounded by nature during the rain—it felt like we were in our own little world!
One of my favorite moments from this session happened when Eileena’s sister jokingly said, “This is some modern-day Notebook shit!” I’m pretty sure she was talking about the way the rain was coming down and how perfect the moment felt, but it was a comment that completely summed up the mood of the day! The whole vibe of the session, the candid laughs, and the pure joy in that moment was so perfect that I had to capture it. And guess what? I caught it on my behind-the-scenes tripod! (One of the perks of always being ready to capture the magic!)

It’s moments like these, those offhand comments and spontaneous laughter, that really make a session stand out. It’s not just about pretty pictures; it’s about capturing the essence of who you are as a couple! I love that rainy days bring out that unfiltered energy, and in turn, it creates images that are full of life and emotion.
Here’s my best advice for your rainy engagement photos: Don’t hold back. If the rain gets you cold and wet, don’t worry! The feeling of being in the moment, of getting a little uncomfortable, is what makes the photos so real. Eileena and David took full advantage of the opportunity to get into the water (even though it was a bit chilly), and I LOVE how those photos turned out. The lake became this perfect, intimate space for us to capture raw emotion, and those moments of them holding each other close are some of my favorites from the session.
Another tip? Bring props! Whether it’s an umbrella, a blanket, or a paddleboard, props can help add some personality to your photos. Eileena and David had a paddleboard with them, which gave the shoot an extra layer of fun and adventure. It also gave us more variety in our shots, adding a relaxed vibe that’s perfect for showcasing how playful and fun your love is. So, if you’re feeling adventurous, props can definitely add that extra spark to your session!
One of the best things about rainy engagement photos is how they can transform into something truly unique. A sunny day might give you a classic engagement photo, but rainy photos—especially in a place like Golden Ears—have that special, timeless quality to them. They’re full of mood and emotion, and there’s a certain magic that comes from being out in the rain, in the middle of nature, completely immersed in your love. It’s the kind of session that will always hold a special place in your heart, and you’ll look back on it with a smile, no matter how long it’s been.
There’s just something so romantic about the rain—especially when you’re with the person you love. It’s the perfect opportunity to make your engagement session a true reflection of your relationship: fun, adventurous, real, and completely you.
“If you are looking for a photographer, stop here. We couldn’t have asked for a better photographer for our engagement and wedding photos. Sarah is so personable and makes every experience so entertaining and enjoyable. My husband and I, are very awkward with taking photos and we typically just have a “hug and smile” photo. She made the whole experience so easy, comfortable and fun. My bridal party couldn’t get enough of Sarah and loved everything about her! Not to mention, her extreme talent, our photos turned out so beautiful, so much better than we could’ve ever imagined. She captured every single emotion in our photos and it told our story beautifully. We couldn’t recommend her enough.” – Eileena
